Animal Crossing : Lost Items Guide

Animal Crossing: New Horizons sometimes loses items. Players can find these items and turn them in for friendship and a small reward.

As players move around their islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, they may notice something new: some items are on an island without an owner. Just like in real life, the villagers in Animal Crossing can lose items from their pockets, and with this new feature, players can have a new reason to be neighbors and chat with their villagers. If players can find out who owns the Animal Crossing item and return it to the correct villager, they can even get a reward.

As a new addition to this game mechanic, players can inspect an item to try and determine who it may belong to. The item always matches the villager's different personality traits. This is especially important because, as with the lost items in other games in the series, after a day in the player's inventory, the item changes to the trash called What Was This Again? and players will just have to find a way to get rid of it. Here's everything you need to know about lost items and their return or disposal in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Lost items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Lost items can be found all over the island and they will always be a book, a notebook or one of two types of drawstring bags. Players can pick up these items in the same way as shells or other items from the ground. Items will always be owned by one of the villagers living on the island.

Players can view an item as soon as it is in their pocket to learn more about it. Unlike previous versions of this mechanic, where the player had to blindly guess who owned the item, players can get a clue to the item's owner. However, there is a catch: the player must be close friends of the owner to learn more about the item and its contents after inspecting it. Otherwise, the item description is just "Someone lost it ...". This is a good incentive for players to get to know the villagers better and improve their friendship.

If the player is a close friend of the owner of the item, he will get to know the content of the item. Usually, these details reveal something about the personality type of the villager who lost the item. Each of the four types of lost items has a special description for each unique personality trait.

Return lost items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Players must try to return the lost item to its owner. In return, the villager will give the player a reward, usually clothing or furniture. When you return an item, you also earn Friendship Points for the player and owner.

If the player returns the item to the correct villager the first time, without showing it to another villager, this will result in a bigger and better reward. Additionally, if the player returns the item to the owner without asking for it, he will receive additional friendship points with the owner.

If the player shows the item to the wrong villager, the villager will let him know who owns it. Players can and should return it to them, but the reward will not be that good.

Get rid of lost items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Players only have one day to return the lost item to its owner. Sometimes this is not possible. If a day passes without the item being returned, it becomes garbage in the player's inventory and the player must get rid of it.

Trash items can be thrown to Nook's Cranny or placed in the trash can near the player's house. It cannot be sold.
